The German top referee Markus Merk will take charge of PSV's UEFA Champions League final group G clash with FC Internazionale. Merk's last game involving PSV was seven years ago when PSV met Manchester United in Eindhoven in a UEFA Champions league match.
PSV enjoyed a 3-1 victory thanks to, among other things, a superb goal by Mateja Kezman, which fans later hailed as the most beautiful goal ever scored by a PSV player. The Serbian striker first rounded Silvestre before unleashing an unstoppable shot, leaving goalkeeper Raymond van der Gouw with no chance to even get a hand on the ball. Wilfred Bouma and Mark van Bommel scored the other goals.
Markus Merk is a top-quality referee, who has gained a lot of experience since he started his career in 1974. The 45-year old German referee officiated at the finals of both the 2003 UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Euro 2004.
PSV v Internazionale is scheduled for Wednesday night; KO at 8. 45 pm. The Italians have already made sure of a place in the knockout stages, while PSV still have a slender chance of advancing to the next stage. A place in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 was guaranteed with their 1-0 win in Moscow two weeks ago.
