PSV showed experience and maturity in their deserved 2-0 victory against Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena, but Sef Vergoossen refused to be carried away, insisting the end of the season is a long way away. The PSV head coach admitted at the post-match press conference that Ajax had had chances to open the scoring and wasted opportunities to score a second-half equaliser. His colleague Adrie Koster admitted that his players had been taught a lesson, as PSV were far more efficient.
'Our game plan was to prevent Ajax from cutting into our penalty area, so we didn't defend too deeply', started Sef Vergoossen his analysis of the game.' As the first half progressed, we put on more pressure on the Ajax defence and felt that we could get a result. We were lucky after the break, when Ajax wasted some good opportunities to level the score. The result was put beyond doubt when Bakkal wrapped things up after 73 minutes.'
Ajax coach Adrie Koster admitted that his players had been taught a lesson by PSV. 'We started brightly and dominated the first ten minutes. PSV, however, proved to be more efficient. They had just one chance before the break and took it. And PSV showed maturity, striking again at a convenient moment for them in the second half. This defeat is a bitter blow.'
