PSV enjoyed a deserved 1-0 victory in the UEFA Cup Round of 16 first-leg tie against Tottenham Hotspur at White Heart Lane on Wednesday night. Jefferson Farfán capitalised on a defensive slip after 34 minutes, scoring the priceless away goal, putting PSV in command.
PSV started with Koevermans, Culina and Méndez at the expense of Danko Lazovic, Otman Bakkal and Balázs Dzsudzsák. Afellay was played left in midfield, while Farfán was to provide support from the right wing. Tottenham made the brighter start, building up most moves on the right wing, while Jenas and Lennon enjoyed plenty of possession of the ball in midfield. Berbatov partnered Keane up front, but the two strikers failed to break down PSV's stubborn defence. Gilberto Farfán had the first shot on goal at White Hart Lane and after 34 minutes PSV got what they wanted. Tottenham debutant Gilberto, who had already been cautioned by the referee after 26 minutes, made an error, as he was robbed by Farfán. The Peruvian striker ran clear and hit a clean ball past keeper Robinson. His finish was clinical and the travelling fans erupted into celebration. The home side upped a gear and got some chances. Pascal Chimbonda was shown a yellow card for a foul on Ibrahim Afellay. Robbie Keane forced PSV stopper Gomes into a brilliant fingertip save in the 45th minute. Farfán sent a free kick wide of the post.
Gilberto was replaced by Jamie O'Hara at half-time. There was again a crisp tempo and both sides had their moments in an entertaining game. PSV started some well-worked flowing moves and Afellay sent an effort wide after he had been picked out by Farfán. Tottenham moved men forward in an evenly contested game. Jermaine Jenas sustained an ankle injury and was stretchered off. Tom Huddlestone left the bench to take his place. Fifteen minutes from time, Lazovic came on for Koevermans. Farfán came close to doubling PSV's advantage, but Robinson denied him with a brilliant save. PSV created the better chances in the frantic closing stages and Lazovic wasted a half chance one minute after he had been brought on as a substitute. Vergoossen took off Farfán, who had put in a commanding display, for Dzsudzsák after 85 minutes. With the clock ticking away, Jan Kromkamp headed the ball over the keeper, but had his goal disallowed for offside, while at the other end Berbatov just failed to connect with a sharp cross from O'Hara. PSV also held out in the four minutes of added time and will defend a 1-0 leg in next Wednesday's return leg at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven.
