Six UEFA Cup round of 16 fixtures were scheduled for Wednesday evening. Huub Stevens, who has been appointed head coach at PSV as from next season, led Hamburger SV to a 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen, but his side were knocked out of the tournament as they had suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg.
Dick Advocaat's FC Zenit succeeded in overcoming a 3-1 deficit from the first leg against Olympique Marseille. Marseille, coached by former PSV head coach Erik Gerets, were inflicted a 2-0 defeat in St Petersburg, so Zenit's away goal in the first leg proved to be decisive. FC Bayern München, with former PSV captain Mark van Bommel, who played the full 90 minutes, progressed to the next round. They were beaten 2-1 at home by Anderlecht, but had already thrashed their opponents 5-0 in Brussels last week. Fiorentina's Manuel da Costa claimed a 2-0 victory against Everton, but the English side scored two goals within sixty minutes, canceling out the deficit. Da Costa is not eligible to play for the Italians, as he had already made appearances for PSV in the Champions League campaign. The Italians eventually won the penalty shoot-out and booked a place in the quarter finals. The Spanish side Getafe, who had knocked FC Twente out of the UEFA Cup, reached the next phase, following a double win (2-1 and 1-0) over Benfica.

Two more UEFA Cup Round of 16 return legs are scheduled for tonight. Werder Bremen host Glasgow Rangers and Bolton Wonderers will travel to Sporting Lisbon. Rangers enjoyed a 2-0 win in the first leg, while Sporting Lisbon scored a valuable away goal in their 1-1 draw at Bolton. The draw for the UEFA Cup quarter finals and semi finals will take place in Nyon in Switzerland on Friday at 2pm.
