Sef Vergoossen told reporter after the game that PSV had been lucky to manage a goalless draw in Nijmegen and praised keeper Gomes for pulling off a string of crucial saves. 'N.E.C. gave us a tough night, but we had never expected an easy ride', explained Vergoossen at the post-match press conference.
'We have made things hard for themselves, but above all credit to N.E.C.', said the PSV head coach. 'Our problem was we gave too many balls away today. We were scrappy in possession and often lost our composure. We battled hard to regain possession, but we should have used the energy to move forward rather than defend. I am delighted we have snatched one point. Gomes kept us in the game with a number of crucial saves. He is a great goalkeeper, someone who does that little bit special. We failed to create chances of any note tonight', concluded Vergoossen.
N.E.C. coach Mario Been thought his side had made huge progress in 2008. 'We were able to hold our own against the defending champions of Holland. It was our intention to put pressure on the PSV defence and close down their midfielders Afellay and Bakkal, as we expected them to show most creativity. Our game plan worked well, but Gomes kept PSV in the game', said Been.
