Schweinsteiger, who missed Germany's last game after getting a red card against Croatia, returned from suspension to open the scoring and take free kicks which Klose and Ballack headed in for goals. Nuno Gomes and Hélder Postiga scored goals for Portugal. Germany coach Joachim Löw was forced to watch the game from the stands, as he was serving a one-game suspension after being sent to the stands during the win over Austria in Germany's last match. Germany became to first team to reach the semi-finals and will meet the winner of the second quarter-final between Croatia and Turkey in Vienna on Friday in the first semi-final in Basel next Wednesday. The Netherlands play Guus Hiddink's Russia in Basel on Saturday and Spain meet Italy in Vienna on Sunday. Portugal coach Scolari will now focus on his new job as manager at Chelsea after having been left empty-handed for the third successive time at a major tournament.
