PSV will take Atlético Madrid at the Philips Stadium at 20:45 CET, as they kick off their 2008/09 Champions League campaign. Atlético secured their return to the UEFA Champions League by defeating FC Schalke 04 in the third qualifying round in August.
4-0 victory against Schalke
After finishing fourth in the Spanish Liga in 2007/08, behind champions Real Madrid, Villareal CF and FC Barcelona, Atlético secured their return to the UEFA Champions League by defeating FC Schalke 04 in the third qualifying round in August. Atlético lost the first leg 1-0 in Germany against the team of the former PSV coach Fred Rutten and striker Jefferson Farfán, but bounced back to win the return 4-0 through goals from Sergio AgĂĽero Diego Forlán Luis GarcĂa and Maxi RodrĂguez, ensuring qualification to the Champions League after an absence of eleven years. Atlético's UEFA Cup campaign last term ended with a 1-0 aggregate defeat by Bolton Wanderers FC in the Round of 32.
Ujfalusi and Heitinga
PSV defender Jan Kromkamp had a brief spell playing alongside Atlético forward Diego Forlán with Villarreal CF during the 2005/06 season. The right back is ruled out of tonight's game as he is recovering from a severe knee injury. The Spanish club's new Czech defender, Tomáš Ujfaluši, featured in the Fiorentina side that won 2-0 at PSV in the UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg last term. He may partner John Heitinga in the centre of defence. For Atlético's Dutch international, the tie represents the first opportunity to play a club match back in his home country since his summer transfer to Spain from Ajax. Atlético will be without defender Mariano PernĂa and midfielder Maxi RodrĂguez who are both suspended. The other Group D tie on Matchday 1 pits Olympique de Marseille against Liverpool.
