UEFA has temporarily lifted Atlético Madrid's two-match home stadium ban for the UEFA Champions clashes with Liverpool and PSV. Atlético will now play host to Liverpool at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid on Wednesday. UEFA has put the ban on hold after the club had lodged an appeal to the decision.
Appeal will take place on 31 October
UEFA decided to temporarily lift Atlético Madrid's two-match home stadium ban in particular because of the organisational and logistical difficulties related to relocating the to another venue at short notice. The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body had ordered Atlético Madrid to play their next two home UEFA Champions League matches at a stadium situated at least 300km from Madrid, as a result of a number of incidents of racist abuse and crowd trouble by their supporters during their Champions League game against Olympique Marseille. A hearing of Atlético Madrid's appeal will take place on 31 October at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. UEFA says that Wednesday's clash between Atlético Madrid and Liverpool will be under particular scrutiny and that safety and security matters will be of the utmost priority. Some 3000 Liverpool fans are expected to attend the game.
