PSV suffered another painful defeat after going down 3-2 against bogey club Roda JC at the Philips Stadium. Last season they slipped to a 4-2 defeat against Roda JC and the visitors were again on the winning side as they claimed their first win of the season on Saturday night. PSV were below par and slipped to their second consecutive Eredivisie defeat in eight days.
Fans rightly disappointed
The joy of the Champions League victory against Olympique Marseille proved to be only short-lived, as PSV did not manage to bounce back from last week's defeat against NAC Breda. The visitors from the county of Limburg, who had lacked cutting edge up front this season and had not enjoyed one single victory so far, did not even have to dig deep to get a result. PSV were sloppy and lacked dedication and spirit. In spite of the midweek victory over Marseille, the team lacked confidence and the fans felt rightly disappointed at a lacklustre display.
Bodor scores opener
PSV coach Huub Stevens was forced to make one change from the team that beat Olympique Marseille 2-0. Ibrahim Afellay was not fit enough to start as he suffered from a strained upper leg muscle and Nordin Amrabat replaced him. The two teams were well-matched throughout the opening stages, but PSV found themselves a goal down after twenty minutes, when Bodor struck a shot across the face of PSV's goal: 0-1.
PSV lacked sharpness and the home crowd grumbled as their high expectations following the Marseille game were never met. It was 40 minutes before the hosts had their first meaningful move, when Stevens had already made two substitutions. On the half-hour mark, Lazovic replaced Amrabat, who had sustained an injury, and Dzsudzsák was brought on for Bréchet. PSV, far from convincing, moved men forward, with Marcellis, Maza and Salcido playing man-to-man defence. Many PSV fans made their displeasure known at the half-time whistle by booing the team from the field.
Dzsudzsák and Lazovic goals
PSV were more attack-minded after the beak and Koevermans had a chance, but PSV were dealt a severe blow when the visitors extended their advantage ten minutes into the second half. Hadouir delivered a left-wing cross and Oper headed home; 0-2. The PSV faithfuls felt shocked to see their team two goals down at the Philips Stadium. With thirty minutes remaining, PSV gave themselves some hope by pulling a goal back, when Dzsudzsák found the net with a sweetly struck free kick. He urged the fans to get behind their team as PSV attempted to score an equaliser. Their hopes of snatching a draw were shattered exactly five minutes later. Bodor evaded his marker, and one-on-one with keeper Isaksson, he kept his composure and coolly slotted home his second goal of the night; 1-3. Stevens brought on Nijland for Méndez and PSV were handed a life-line ten minutes from time. Nijland intercepted a poor pass and set up Lazovic. The Serbian striker rounded keeper Castro before slotting home; 2-3. PSV surged forward in numbers, but it was too little too late as Roda JC's disciplined ranks comfortably held on for a stunning 3-2 victory. PSV look to return to winning ways on Tuesday when they face ADO Den Haag.
