PSV were fourth in the Eredivisie table on Saturday night, but FC Twente and Ajax capitalised on PSV's 3-2 defeat against Roda JC and leapfrogged Huub Stevens's team, who have tumbled to sixth in the table on matchday seven. The gap between PSV and FC Groningen, who regained the top position, is now four points.
Ajax beat N.E.C.; FC Twente see off Vitesse
Ajax played host to N.E.C. on Sunday afternoon. The visitors from Nijmegen had never recorded a victory at the Amsterdam ArenA before, but N.E.C. coach Mario Been thought his team had a fair chance of claiming all three points. Ajax striker DarĂo Cvitanich was forced to hobble off the field soon with a hamstring problem, but the home side were never tested as they eased to a comfortable and fully deserved 2-0 win. FC Twente traveled to the Gelredome to face Vitesse, who had earned only two points from their six opening games. Vitesse still have two points as they were outclassed by FC Twente, with Marko Arnautovic netting goals either side of the break; 0-2.
Feyenoord-sc Heerenveen: 2-2
sc Heerenveen could also have leapfrogged PSV, but the Frisians dropped two points against Feyenoord at the Rotterdam Kuip during the closing stages. The hosts were two goals down three minutes into the second half, but fought themselves back into the game and snatched a late draw from Michael Mols' 90th minute equaliser; 2-2. FC Groningen have gone back to the top, with sixteen ponits from seven games. NAC Breda, who were held to a 0-0 draw at FC Utrecht, have the same number of points but FC Groningen have a better goal difference. AZ, who have stretched their winning streak to five Eredivisie games, are third with fifteen points. PSV have twelve points, just like Heracles Almelo and sc Heerenveen, who currently sit sixth and seventh respectively. Newly promoted FC Volendam are still rooted to the bottom of the table, with no points.
