There were differing outcomes for PSV's Champions League opponents. Olympique Marseille suffered a heavy 4-2 defeat at home against Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League, following a 1-0 win at Chelsea. Atlético Madrid shared honours with Villareal in a 4-4 thriller.
Marseille suffer defeat at home
Olympique Marseille missed the chance to go top of the French Ligue 1, as they were beaten 4-2 by Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Vélodrome. After conceding an early goal from Guillaume Hoarau, Mamadou Niang and Mathieu Valbuena scored first-half goals to give Erik Gerets' team a 2-1 lead at half time. Peguy Luyindula (2-2), Jérôme Rothen (2-3) and again Hoarau were on target for the visitors after the break, as PSG claimed a 4-2 win. Olympique Marseille, who slumped to their first defeat at home this season, stay second with nineteen points after ten games, two points behind Olympique Lyon, who are still on top of the Ligue 1, in spite of their goalless draw against AJ Auxerre on Saturday. PSV will make a trip to the south of France on 4 November to meet Olympique Marseille in their Champions League Group D fourth game.
Liverpool end Chelsea's 86-game unbeaten run
Liverpool showed their good form against Chelsea in London on Saturday afternoon. The Reds moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League, with 23 points from nine games, after a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge ended Chelsea's 86-game unbeaten league run at home. Xabi Alonso scored the winning goal for Rafael Benítez's team in the 10th minute. Chelsea have twenty points, the same as Hull City, who continued their impressive run with a 3-0 away win at West Bromwich Albion.

In the Spanish league, Atlético Madrid and Villareal shared honours in a 4-4 draw. With one minute on the clock, Simão opened the scoring for Atlético. Diego Forlán seemed to have wrapped up the game after 22 minutes when he doubled Atlético's advantage. On the stroke of half time Atlético player Benega was dismissed after which Villareal staged a strong comeback, with Marcos Senna, Llorente, Gonzalo Rodríguez and Guiseppe Rossi scoring four goals in the space of just twenty minutes for the home side. Yet Atlético Madrid managed to salvage a point as Simão and Raul García scored late goals in a thriller at the Madrigal. Atlético Madrid are currently tenth with ten points after eight games.
