On Tuesday, representatives of 14 football clubs, including PSV, Charlton Athletic and Glasgow Rangers, gathered at The Valley in London to sign up to a new alliance to encourage social responsibility in football.
PSV signed up to the new alliance at The Valley, the home of Charlton Athletic FC, who launched the project, along with Djurgårdens IF and PSV. Club representatives have signed a pledge committing them to six areas of development within their communities, including addressing anti-social behaviour, reducing racial tensions and improving health and education. Charlton chief executive Steve Waggott said: 'Ultimately I hope it will lead to a more collaborative approach by clubs across Europe, as well as clubs learning from one another how they can improve their projects around such issues as anti-social behaviour, education, integration, environment and employment.' Glasgow Rangers and Club Brugge have also joined the network and the clubs expect European governing body UEFA to become a partner of the network. PSV's representative Frank Wijnveld acknowledged the importance of a European network. 'We think it's very important to create a European network and we now hope UEFA will also step in as their power in football could really give us a lift. It's the start of something really important and we hope to get as many clubs involved as we can.'
