Three days ahead of their vital Champions league clash at Olympique Marseille, PSV comfortably eased past Willem II, recording a 2-0 home win. Huub Stevens' team, who omitted to score more goals against Willem II, have earned maximum points from their two Eredivisie games this week.
PSV end a hectic week in style
PSV ended a hectic week in style with a 2-0 win over Willem II. They collected six points, conceded no goals, welcomed back Jan Kromkamp from injury and were happy to get through Saturday's game unscathed. The visitors, who had produced some good results lately, saw their winning streak halted, as they were outclassed by PSV from start to finish. Koevermans, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Saturday, played a major role in PSV's 2-0 victory. The prolific striker superbly volleyed home from twenty yards to double PSV's advantage. PSV will start to prepare for the Champions League Group D match against Olympique Marseille tomorrow. The squad will fly to the south of France on Monday.
Swinkels own goal
PSV made two changes to the team that defeated ADO Den Haag 2-0 on Tuesday, with Koevermans replacing Lazovic and Wuytens in for Méndez. Addo retained his place in the heart of defence, where he partnered captain Simons. Willem II gave a starting place to Rens van Eijden, the PSV defender, who is on loan with the team from Tilburg. PSV took an early lead. Five minutes were on the clock when Dzsudzsák delivered a cross from the left flank and the unfortunate Willem II defender mishit the ball into his own goal; 1-0. PSV kept up the pressure and tried to forge clear-cut openings against a compact Willem II defence. The hosts had several chances to double their lead in the first half. Dzsudzsák sent a free kick wide. Koevermans headed over the bar and Wuytens just failed to connect with a cross. The visitors from Tilburg, who had hoped to catch PSV out on the counter-attack, did not put in an impressive first-half display. On the close of half time, Afellay accelerated away from his marker and dispatched a low shot that went narrowly wide of Aerts' post.
Koevermans scored a peach
Although Willem II never threatened, PSV were only enjoying a narrow 1-0 lead and the visitors still hoped to strike with a counter attack. Soon after the restart, PSV had a chance to extend their advantage, but they wrapped up the game on the hour mark, when Koevermans added lustre to his jubilee appearance. PSV's striker, who made his 200th career league appearance, collected the ball well before delivering a twenty-yard volley that sailed past keeper Aerts into the net; 2-0. Afellay left the field fifteen minutes from time to be replaced by Nijland and Lazovic was brought on as a substitute for Bakkal after 80 minutes. With six minutes remaining, Stevens made his final substitution as Kromkamp, who recovered from his groin injury, came on to replace Koevermans. With the clock ticking away, Willem II had already accepted defeat and PSV were content with the win.
