On the first few days of the new year, PSV.nl will present a review of 2008. It has been a memorable year in the history of PSV. Today this page will take you through the month of January, looking back at the games, the goals, the incidents, the drama and the memories. Sef Vergoossen took over as coach and guided his team to excellent victories over Feyenoord and Ajax. The Hungarian Balázs Dzsudzsák joined PSV in January.
Sef Vergoossen took over as coach
Sef Vergoossen took over as coach, as PSV resumed training on 7 January to prepare for the second part of the season. With one goal in mind- i.e. retaining the title- the interim coach put his players, including new signing Balázs Dzsudzsák, through their paces, when Eric Addo, Jefferson Farfán, Jonathan Reis and Carlos Salcido had not returned yet. On 8 January, Dzsudzsák made his debut for PSV in a 2-0 friendly win over Fortuna Sittard. Charly van den Ouwenland scored an own goal and Ibrahim Afellay doubled PSV's lead. PSV faced the VVV-Venlo reserves in a friendly, sandwiched between the two league fixtures against Feyenoord and VVV-Venlo, and suffered a 3-2 defeat.
PSV parted company with Joop Hiele and Edward Sturing
PSV announced that they would part company with goalkeeping coach Joop Hiele, who had been with the club for nine seasons. As a member of the coaching staff, Hiele worked with head coaches Eric Gerets, Guus Hiddink, Ronald Koeman, Jan Wouters and, until the end of the 2007/08 season, interim coach Sef Vergoossen. It was also announced that Edward Sturing, head of PSV's youth academy, would quit his post as well. The 44-year-old coach confirmed he was keen to take charge of a team as coach again. He was to sign a contract with Vitesse as assistant coach.
Thirteen points from five matches
PSV travelled to Rotterdam to face Feyenoord in the first league match after the winter break. PSV outclassed the hosts at the Rotterdam Kuip and Otman Bakkal's goal after 40 minutes was enough to secure a deserved and morale boosting 1-0 victory. PSV were held to a 1-1 draw by VVV-Venlo on 20 January. Dzsudzsák opened his scoring account for PSV, canceling out the opening goal scored by Ofrany after only two minutes. Sef Vergoossen then oversaw two victories against Rotterdam-based teams. PSV enjoyed a 3-1 win over Sparta and left it late to secure a 2-1 victory against Excelsior, when, with time running out, substitute Danny Koevermans spared PSV's blushes. PSV ended the month of January on a high as they earned an emphatic 2-0 win over Ajax in the Amsterdam ArenA, with Otman Bakkal as well as Balázs Dzsudzsák again getting their names on the score sheet. Edgar Davids was sent off, as PSV earned thirteen points from five league matches in the first month of 2008.
Miscellaneous
Lee Nguyen, born in the USA, of Vietnamese descent, joined Danish club Randers FC from PSV on the January 2008 deadline day, while Italian Serie A outfit Fiorentina signed defender Manuel da Costa. PSV legend Romário celebrated his 42nd birthday on Monday, January 29 and Eric Addo's Ghana reached the Africa Nations Cup quarter finals. And on 31 December 2007, Kenneth Perez completed a u-turn and rejoined his old club Ajax, less than six months after making a move from Ajax to PSV.
