Ibrahim Afellay is expected to make his 100th Eredivisie appearance for PSV against ADO Den Haag tonight. The 22-year-old international midfielder joined PSV in the 1996/97 season and has come through the ranks in Eindhoven. He has scored 23 goals in 99 matches so far.
Hiddink handed first start to Afellay
Ibrahim Afellay was handed his first start for PSV, under coach Guus Hiddink, on 4 February 2004. Afellay, who was 17 years old then, replaced Johann Vogel in the 72nd minute of PSV's 1-0 cup defeat against NAC Breda. He made his Eredivisie debut ten days later, on 14 February 2004, against FC Twente, when he came off the bench to replace team mate Kevin Hofland who had sustained an injury. PSV enjoyed a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a goal by Mateja Kezman. Ibrahim Afellay did not make his UEFA Champions League debut for PSV before the 1998/99 season. He was included in the starting line-up to face Schalke 04, when PSV recorded a 1-0 victory. Six weeks later he was again named in the starting eleven, along with his soul mate Ismail Aissati, when PSV earned a 1-0 win over AC Milan (1-0). Afellay started all eight UEFA Champions League matches for PSV in the 2005/06 season. The past few seasons Afellay was sometimes blamed for not showing enough efficiency in front of goal. Afellay has meanwhile silenced his critics, after bringing his tally for the season to eleven.
