PSV took all three points with a 3-5 victory in an action-packed game against FC Volendam on Sunday afternoon. PSV moved closer to their nearest rivals who all dropped points. Lodeweges' team scored fourteen goals in three matches but had Ola Toivonen sent off in the 53rd minute.
PSV moved closer to their rivals
PSV caretaker coach Dwight Lodeweges guided his team to their third victory in a row. PSV scored fourteen goals in those three matches, but sloppily conceded three goals in Volendam. Ola Toivonen was controversially sent off in the 63rd minute for an alleged elbow. PSV narrowed the gap with rivals Ajax, who crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Vitesse, and FC Twente, who were held to a 2-2 draw at De Graafschap.
Five first-half goals
Dwight Lodeweges opted for the same starting line-up that thrashed ADO Den Haag 6-0 earlier this week. PSV made an early breakthrough, when Toivonen beautifully curled a free kick over the wall and into the top left corner; 0-1. They doubled their lead after 27 minutes, when Bréchet headed home a corner from close range. The hosts reduced the deficit only one minute later, with Sheotahul simply tapping the ball home. And when Toivonen pushed down an opponent in the box in the 34th minute, De Lange converted the resulting spot kick, putting his side on level terms; 2-2. Somehow against the run of play, PSV regained the lead five minutes from half time. Afellay started a mazy solo run, accelerated his pace and turned provider for Méndez who slid the ball home; 2-3.
Two second-half red cards
Méndez seemed to have wrapped up the points for PSV with his second goal of the afternoon, scored six minutes into the second half. Toivonen played the ball through the legs of his marker and set up the Ecuadorian midfielder. The Swede was again the centre of attention in the 53rd minute, when he went for a header with FC Volendam defender Tim Bakens. Referee Pieter Vink did not hesitate and immediately reached for his pocket and showed Toivonen a red card for an alleged deliberate elbow, a controversial decision. Lodeweges introduced Bakkal for Amrabat and FC Volendam striker Tuyp was brought on to replace Hofstede in the 65th minute. The substitute had been on the pitch for barely sixty seconds, when he was sent off for a vicious tackle on Afellay. Five minutes from time, Bakkal was put clear. He rounded keeper Verhoeven before comfortably slotting home; 2-5. Van Zaanen finished the scoring three minute before the final whistle. PSV bagged all three points thanks to the 3-5 victory, moving closer to their nearest rivals.
