PSV finished the 2008/09 season in fourth place. They last concluded a campaign with a finish outside of the top three in the 1980/81 season. PSV still secured a place in next season's Europa League and will compete in a European competition for the 36th consecutive time.
Eredivisie statistics
Timmy Simons has figured in all 34 of PSV's league fixtures. The PSV captain was substituted only one time. Stef Nijland came off the bench to replace Simons after 75 minutes in PSV's 4-0 win over Heracles Almelo on 22 November 2008. Otman Bakkal came on as a substitute sixteen times, while Nordin Amrabat was taken off fifteen times. Besides Simons, Andreas Isaksson (33), Dirk Marcellis (31) and Balázs Dzsudzsák (30) also made thirty or more appearances for PSV this season. Isaksson missed only one game this season: the Sweden goalkeeper was ruled out of the game away at Roda JC on 18 January 2009 with a touch of flu. Ibrahim Afellay has been a key figure for PSV this season. The midfielder became PSV's leading scorer with as many as thirteen strikes. He proved to be more of a clinical finisher after scoring only two goals last season. Balázs Dzsudzsák netted eleven goals and Danny Koevermans as well as Danko Lazovic were on target eighth times. Ola Toivonen, who joined PSV in the January transfer window, scored six goals. Defender Dirk Marcellis remarkably never received a single yellow card this season. Isaksson was never booked, either, while Afellay, who was cautioned seven times last season, was shown yellow once in the 2008/09 campaign.
Dutch Cup and Champions League statistics
PSV were knocked out of the KNVB Cup in the second round by AZ on penalties after they had seen off the PSV reserves 3-0 in the first round, courtesy of a double from from Danko Lazovic and Stijn Wuytens. PSV did not enjoy a successful UEFA Champions League campaign. After six Group D matches, they finished bottom of their group. Andreas Isaksson, Carlos Salcido, Timmy Simons and Edison Méndez figured in all six of PSV's Champions League fixtures. Danny Koevermans scored four of five goals in Europe, while Danko Lazovic netted one goal. Bas Roorda, Cássio Ramos and Mike Zonneveld did not leave the bench in PSV's European campaign. PSV had already bowed out of the Champions League when Ola Toivonen and Haibin Zhou made a move to Eindhoven.
Miscellaneous
PSV won one trophy this season: they clinched the Johan Cruijff Shield with a 2-0 victory over Feyenoord at the Amsterdam Arena in the traditional opener to the Dutch football season. Huub Stevens and his successor Dwight Lodeweges handed starts to 24 players in all competitions (Dutch league, KNVB Cup and Champions League). PSV played 43 official competitive matches (34 Eredivisie games, 2 KNBV Cup ties, 6 Champions League games and the Johan Cruijff Shield contest). They scored 81 goals (71 goals scored in the Eredivisie , 3 in the KNVB Cup , 5 in the Champions League and 2 in the Cruijff Shield contest ). They conceded 33 Eredivisie goals and 14 goals in the European competition.
