PSV player Mark van Bommel was named footballer of the year in Kaatsheuvel yesterday. Van Bommel was first in the prestigious ranking, organized by Telesport, the sports section of the Dutch morning paper, and Voetbal International, a Dutch football magazine. Dirk Kuyt and Danny Landzaad were runners-up."I have always claimed: I would love to earn that golden shoe before I leave", Van Bommel was quoted in de De Telegraaf. The PSV captain won the silver shoe and the bronze shoe on previous occasions. Dick Schneider, one of the former football players that have awarded the points this season said: "This is a genuine reward for the fine performances he put in this campaign. Van Bommel truly made his mark for PSV."Four PSV players preceded Mark van Bommel, since the introduction of the trophy in the 1981-1982 season. Ruud Gullit was first in 1986 and Gerald Vanenburg, Jaap Stam and Johann Vogell also won golden shoes awards. Vanenburg won the trophy even two times. One more PSV players found his name in this season’s top ten ranking. Young-Pyo Lee’s achievements did not go unnoticed: he is seventh in the ranking.
