PSV have claimed their first win of the season. They beat Vitesse 2-1 in the Eindhoven Philips Stadium on Sunday afternoon. PSV had to come from a goal down as Alex headed home an unfortunate own goal, but Farfán and Cocu made sure of victory with first half goals. Farfán equalizerAfter the exploratory opening stages PSV took the initiative, but found it hard to create space against the visitors’ compact defence. Theo Lucius got the best opportunity, but he failed to make contact with a fine Ibrahim Afellay cross. PSV conceded nothing at all; yet Vitesse opened the scoring on 20 minutes. They needed help from Alex, who unfortunately headed home the ball past keeper Gomes, when he attempted to clear a Theo Janssen centre; 0-1. PSV did not panic and tried to cancel out the deficit by starting many moves at a high pace. The equalizer was scored just after the half-hour mark, when Jefferson Farfán superbly fired home a free kick from some 30 yards out. Vitesse stuck to their defensive match plan and needed a lot of physical strength to keep PSV at bay. On the stroke of half time, though, PSV deservedly took the lead. An Afellay free kick was not cleared very well and PSV captain Phillip Cocu pounced on the rebound and scored from the turn: 2-1. Same veinAfter the break the game continued in the same vein. PSV had most possession of the ball and played attacking football and Vitesse hoped some counter attacks would do the trick. PSV controlled proceedings and tried to wrap up things with a third goal. They had to be alert, though, and substitute Fred Benson was put completely clear five minutes from final time, but his effort went wide of the goal. Vitesse put men forward and played long balls, but PSV held on. Ibrahim Afellay, who started some fine solo runs, was cautioned and has now collected three yellow cards. If he picks up one more yellow card, he will be automatically suspended for one game. The next fixture is scheduled on Sunday, when PSV travel to Roda JC.
