Guus Hiddink has guided the Australian national team to a World Cup 2006 spot. It is the first time Australia have qualified for a World Cup final tournament since 1974. The Socceroos put on a fabulous display be beating Uruguay on penalties in Sidney. Bresciano goalUruguay claimed a 1-0 win in Montevideo last weekend, so Guus Hiddink told his players to score one goal at least and not concede a goal themselves. Harry Kewell found Marco Bresciano on 35 minutes and the latter scored the goal that brought so much relief to the Socceroos. The two teams were engaged in a bruising battle during the remaining minutes of official time. They fought out an evenly contested match, in spite of the fact that the South Americans created the better chances. PSV player Jason Culina played the full 90 minutes.PenaltiesAs neither side managed to score a goal in extra time, either, a penalty shoot out was needed in the Telstra Stadium, which was coloured yellow-green by a capacity 82, 000 crowd. During extra time Hiddink had already foreseen that penalties might be taken and that’s why he had the tall deputy keeper Zjelko Kalac do a lengthy warming-up. Brett Emerton, however, had sustained an injury, so that the PSV head coach was forced to bring on his third substitute. It proved to be a wise decision, as Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer superbly saved two penalties. Australia captain Mark Viduka also missed, but substitute John Aloisi converted his spot kick and Australia had beaten Uruguay 4-2 on penalties. The Socceroos have reached the finals of the most prestigious football tournament for the first time in 32 years. Guus Hiddink has accomplished his tough mission wonderfully and he has played a major contribution in making the dreams of Australia come true.A survey of the penalty shoot out:Harry Kewell 1-0Dario Rodriguez MISSES (Schwarzer saves)Lucas Neill 2-0Gustavo Varela 2-1Tony Vidmar 3-1Fabian Estoyanoff 3-2Mark Viduka MISSES (shot went wide)Marcelo Zalayeta MIST (Schwarzer saves)John Aloisi 4-2 (Australia have qualified for the World Cup 2006!)
