PSV suffered defeat in the Philips Stadium, following an unbeaten run of fifteen European games. PSV coach Guus Hiddink thought the result was "obviously disappointing", but he added that PSV refused to throw in the towel yet. Hiddink explained at the post-match press conference that PSV had made energetic efforts in a 'typically European game'. "The result is obviously disappointing. We will travel to Lyon and meet a side that knows the ropes. It will be a very tough challenge indeed, but you never know. PSV will never throw in the towel beforehand."Hiddink was particularly pleased with his side’s first half performance. "It was nice to see we made it a 'European' game in the first half. We created a number of good chances; both teams were ambitious and committed."PSV earned a great opportunity in the early stages, when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink produced a glancing header. "Coupet pulled off an excellent save, but it inspired us to put in a good first half team performance. We played very well, but it’s a shame we could not score a goal in that period. Lyon put pressure on us after the break, but we managed to hold on, until Juninho took a free kick that went through our wall of defenders into the goal. It took a swerving drive. It was a bitter moment. And it’s too bad Koné omitted to score in the final minute when Vennegoor headed on a long ball unto his path. The final score could have been much more pleasant for us." Olympique Lyon coach Gérard Houllier thought his side deserved to win. "We have shown we are a physically and mentally strong side. We are not celebrating yet. We want to reach the next phase", he announced in the press room. The Frenchman was proud of his players. "It was a good game and we proved we have a quality side. It was a tough, physical game, but it was not a dirty game. We knew it would be a physically demanding game." Houllier was brief in his comment on the save that Coupet pulled off from a Vennegoor header in the first minute. "We could have won 2-3 as well." The Lyon coach expects a tough return in two weeks. "It will be another battle, in which the two teams will give their all."
