Excelsior have clinched the First Division title in style and thus ensured promotion to the Dutch Eredivisie. The Rotterdam outfit saw off second-placed VVV Venlo 3-1 last night. Excelsior last became champions in 1979. They were relegated from the Dutch flight three seasons ago. They did not win the play offs, so that they were relegated to the First Division. Only if Excelsior crash to two straight league defeats and Helmond Sport manage to make amends for a stunning 23 goal difference, things could go wrong after all for the team coached by Mario Been. Dirk Jan Derksen gave VVV the lead on Friday night. The striker himself started the move and when he had been picked out by Niels Fleuren, he tapped home the opening goal for the visitors from close range. Six minutes later Excelsior drew level. Luigi Bruins set up Andwélé Slory, who restored parity. Slory played a major part after the break once again. The pacy forward was fouled in the area and Damien Hertog converted from the spot. Substitute Johan Voskamp then put the icing on the cake by making it three. The super sub has now taken his season’s tally to eight goals. He netted all goals after he had been brought on as a substitute.
