FC Barcelona, who included Mark van Bommel in their starting line up, have reached the UEFA Champions League semi finals. Barça enjoyed a deserved 2-0 win over Benfica, coached by Ronald Koeman in Nou Camp Stadium on Wednesday night. The first leg in Lisbon ended in a 0-0 drew. It was then an evenly contested encounter, in particular during the second half, but the team coached by Ronald Koeman was hardly given any chances in Barcelona last night. Mark van Bommel earned a penalty on five minutes, but Ronaldinho failed to convert from the spot. The former PSV midfielder himself created a good opportunity, but he was unable to finish clinically. Yet Ronaldinho and Eto'o made sure of a deserved 2-0 win by scoring goals on either side of the break. FC Barcelona will meet AC Milan in the semi finals. The Italians knocked out Olympique Lyon from the tournament by pulling off a late gasp 3-1 win last Tuesday night. The French had eliminated PSV in the first knock-out round. Mark van Bommel will now be given an excellent opportunity to take revenge for last season’s elimination from the Champions League. PSV had made amends for the 2-0 first semi final defeat, but were cruelly left empty handed in the closing stages when they conceded a goal after all. The semi final fixtures are scheduled for 18 April and 26 April next. Arsenal and Villareal will meet in the other semi final. The English team drew 0-0 with Juventus, and have reached the semi finals, following the 2-0 first leg home win.Villareal, who knocked out Inter, take part in the most prestigious European tournament for the first time and have immediately made their mark by reaching the semi finals.
