Heurelho da Silva Gomes has extended his contract with PSV until 2011. The popular Brazilian goalkeeper, who has been one of the most outstanding players in the successful PSV team the past two seasons, had originally closed a deal that would tie him to PSV until 2009. Guus Hiddink announced the good news during the weekly Friday media briefing at De Herdgang training base. PSV Chairman Rob Westerhof, Guus Hiddink, Director of Football Stan Valckx and Chairman of the Board of Directors Jan Timmer have successfully completed the negotiations. Gomes moved to Eindhoven in the summer of 2004 and soon developed into one of the most important key players. On top of that, the Brazilian is always the life and soul in the dressing room and he is a darling of the crowd. Chairman Westerhof was delighted with the goalkeeper’s contract extension. "Gomes’s value to the team is undisputed; he is a key player in our team. We are able to reveal our high ambitions, now that Gomes has put pen to paper to a contract extension. Gomes is the ideal stopper for PSV and he is one the best goalies in the world. We are very content that he will be our man between the posts the next five seasons", concluded Westerhof. Gomes himself is also delighted with the contract extension. "I have always maintained that I feel at home here in Eindhoven. We won the double last season and we are still in a position to repeat that feat this season once again. This is great and things have even surpassed my high expectations. I am proud I have won these trophies, two years after I started my European adventures. My family and I feel at home in this town. Our fans support me tremendously. They start singing and chanting, even when I just start my warming up. I think that’s wonderful. I feel honoured that the club has indicated they want me to stay. A two-year contract extension gives me a great feeling of recognition and appreciation. I am happy to be a PSV player", felt Gomes. By offering Gomes a contract extension, PSV have taken the first step in keeping in tact the squad that has dominated the Dutch league for a few seasons and that has done so well in Europe. There is no team in the Dutch Eredivisie that conceded fewer goals this season and PSV also boast good statistics in this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign. PSV goalkeeper Gomes kept blank sheets in all of the UFC ties in the Eindhoven Philips Stadium this season, including the encounter against semi finalists AC Milan. Gomes was linked with several clubs by the media the past few weeks, but these rumours have proved to be unfounded. PSV will strive after more successes, knowing Gomes will be their regular goalkeeper the next few seasons.
