Gerald Vanenburg, a former PSV player and Young PSV coach, will be at the helm at Helmond Sport next season. The 42 year inhabitant of Utrecht will succeed Ruud Brood as head coach, it was officially announced today. Gerald Vanenburg, who was born on 5 March 1964, was in the service of PSV for seven seasons. In the closing stages of his career Vaantje (as his nickname is) joined FC Utrecht, the club of his home town. He made 199 appearances in official games for PSV, during which he scored 58 goals. Vanenburg was capped for his country 42 times during which he scored one goal. Vanenburg became a youth trainer at PSV in 2000, after he had finished his career as a professional football player at 1860 München. He was assistant coach with that club in 2001 and he was appointed head coach at 1860 München for the 2003-2004 season. Vanenburg will cooperate at Helmond Sport with assistant coach Mario Verlijsdonk and goal keeping coach Anton Scheutjens. Helmond Sport are still involved in the play-offs where a place in the Dutch Eredivisie is at stake, so Vanenburg may take charge as head coach at a side that show their skills in the Dutch top flight next season.
