Germany had a bright start to the World Cup 2006, following a rather narrow 4-2 win over Costa Rica. It was the highest-scoring opening match in World Cup history.The visitors could have stunned the uncertain German defence, but the hosts saved their blushes by scoring some fine goals. Ecuador saw off Poland 2-0. The fans of host nation Germany must be in a party mood, after Germany earned a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the opening match of the finals on Friday. Phillip Lahm scored a superb opening goal, when only six minutes were on the clock and Miroslav Klose, who netted a trademark double, made sure of a crucial win. Group A rivals Poland were dealt a major blow, as Ecuador collected a deserved 2-0 win in Gelsenkirchen. The South Americans showed more technical skills, were physically stronger and proved to have more creative ideas. The first Dutchman to make an appearance in the tournament is Leo Beenhakker, who will take charge as coach of the Soca Warriors, when Trinidad & Tobago take on Sweden on Saturday.The opening game of Holland against Serbia & Montenegro is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
