Guus Hiddink, the new head coach of Russia, has named Igor Korneev as his assistant. "For me this is an wonderful opportunity to cooperate with one of the best coaches in the world", announced the Russian, who has signed a two-year deal.Johan Neeskens had decided before to ply his trade with FC Barcelona, but Guus Hiddink has now been able to persuade Igor Korneev to be his assistant in Russia. “Although I like my job at the Feyenoord Youth Academy very much, I obviously want to develop myself as a coach. That’s why I didn’t have to think long when Hiddink approached me” Korneev will be Hiddink’s assistant the next two seasons. They will start their new job in Russia after the World Cup. The former Russian international may also take charge of Young Russia. When Korneev had retired from professional football as a player (he had spells at CSKA Moscow, Barcelona, SC Heerenveen and Feyenoord), he became a youth coach with Feyenoord in 2004. Although he had still got two years left on his contract, offcials of the Rotterdam club were willing to comply with his request to make this move.
