Guus Hiddink was the only of four Dutch coaches that was still in contention for the world title, but the Socceroos slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Italy, following a rather dubiously won penalty deep in stoppage time. Australia coach Guus Hiddink bemoaned the harsh penalty decision. “It was a questionable decision. I feel one can have doubts about that penalty. It’s a shame we should have been eliminated in this way. Of course I am dejected: we suffered defeat in the final second. Yet I am proud of my team and the way the played. We dominated the game against giants Italy. The only thing we can blame ourselves for is that we failed to efficiently produce accurate final passes in the area." The game was decided in the third minute of injury time, with 12 seconds left to play. Full left back Fabio Grosso managed to cut into the Australian box, before cleverly falling over the body of Lucas Neill, who had slid in front of him. Grosso tripped over the defender’s back and referee Medina Cantalejo pointed at the spot. Francesco Totti converted the last kick of the game. Australia go out of the tournament and so the World Cup campaign is also over for PSV player Jason Culina.
