PSV completed their pre-season preparations by slipping to a 3-0 defeat against 1.FC Nürnberg last Saturday afternoon. "We suffered an emphatic defeat", announced Ronald Koeman at the post-match press conference. "We put in a poor first-half performance, but we did better after the break. However, we omitted to take our chances." PSV were trailing 2-0 at half time. The hosts scored the opening goal, courtesy of a defensive mistake by Manuel da Costa and extended their lead following another defensive error. "Players will make mistakes and Da Costa is a young lad. Things like that happen. We were not well-organised at all, when they scored their second goal. Our players that appeared at the World Cup resumed training only two weeks ago. We have one week before we play Ajax for Johan Cruijff Shield contest", explained Koeman. He added that the internationals played the full 90 minutes to get match rhythm." Hans Mayer, the former FC Twente coach, who joined 1.FC Nürnberg, thought his side had approached the game well. "We did not want to allow PSV to play their passing game. PSV put on the pressure in the first twenty minutes after the break, but fortunately they did not take their chances." Mayer made a slip of the tongue, when he referred to his colleague as 'Erwin' Koeman and representatives of the German media did not forget to make fun of the coach.
