Cocu given a rousing send-off (PSV.nl)

Phillip Cocu, who retired from international duty after the World Cup in Germany, was given a rousing send-off by the crowd in the Philips Stadium last Thursday night to mark his retirement. "Privileged""I feel very proud to present you this shield on behalf of the Dutch Football Federation and the fans", said Cocu’s former team and soul mate Frank de Boer, ahead of Wednesday night’s Holland-Belarus Euro 2008 qualifying game (3-0)."You represented Holland at three European championships and at two World Cup tournaments and you were a shining example to your team mates because of your great commitment, mentality and passion. You led by example and we hope to see you back soon, as a coach." The PSV captain, who won as many as 101 caps for his country, said in his speech of thanks that he considered it an honour to make appearances for Holland for a decade. "I feel privileged. I am here to thank the fans for the support they have given us all over the world. I wish the Dutch national team all the best and hope everybody will support the team, in particular at times when things do not go exactly in accordance with expectations", concluded Cocu. Debut in 1996Cocu retired from retired from international duty after the World Cup in Germany. The midfielder, who was handed his debut on 24 April 1996 when Holland suffered a 1-0 defeat, at home against Germany, made his 101st appearance for his country, when Holland slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.Cocu previously represented the Netherlands at the Euro 1996 in England, the Euro 2000 in Holland and Belgium, the Euro 2004 in Portugal, and at the 1998 World Cup in France and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The 1998 World Cup was his most successful tournament. Holland coached by Guus Hiddink were one of the best teams, but were beaten on penalties by Brazil in the semi-final. Cocu missed a penalty in that shoot-out. Versatile Cocu scored goals for Holland, played in several positions and was a vital member of the squad, as he always considered the team’s interests of paramount importance.
