PSV earned a deserved 2-0 win over ADO Den Haag, who are rooted to the bottom of the table, thanks to second half goals scored by Diego Tardelli and Edison Mendez. PSV played their fifth game in fifteen days and ADO suffered their fifth league defeat in a row. It was a very physical game, as might be expected, but PSV kept their composure. The visitors from Eindhoven put in a rather poor first half performance, but after the break they started to put on pressure on the ADO Den Haag defence. The opening goal, scored by Diego Tardelli, was the turning point of the game, when ADO felt they were treated unfairly. PSV were not in great shape during the first forty-five minutes. Cocu, Culina, Afellay and Farfán were all sidelined and Patrick Kluivert joined the growing casualty list on seventeen minutes. The striker indicated he could not carry on any longer and Beerens came off the bench to replace him. ADO had already created most danger, when Mols fired a shot that took a deflection before it hit the post. The hosts, who were left empty handed in their previous four games, gave PSV a hard time and hoped to pull off a shock result. PSV never threatened and waited for Koné to make the difference with a solo run. The African could have broken the deadlock on the stroke of half time, when he was in a one-to-one situation with goalkeeper Postma, after Simons had superbly picked him out. The ADO stopper did very well to deny Koné, though.PSV gradually took control after the interval. They did not earn a great many chances, but took the lead in the 57th minute all the same. It was not an ordinary goal at all: a shot by Koné was cleared off the line, while goalkeeper Postma was on the ground. Koné then delivered a cross and Tardelli comfortably headed home at the far post. It was a valid goal, but Postma had to be stretchered off the pitch with a broken leg. Koné and Beerens, who did very well as a substitute, continued to create dangerous moments. First Koné was controversially adjudged to be offside, after which defender Christiaan Kum committed a nasty foul on Beerens. Referee Luinge did not see a need to reach into his pocket. PSV kept on dominating the game, also when Aissati had been brought on to take over from Tardelli. ADO earned only one chance in the second period, from a Bodde free kick. Five minutes from time Koné delivered a clever through ball for Mendez, who rounded substitute goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar before wrapping up the game; 0-2. The Ecuadorian took his season’s tally to three goals and made sure of a deserved win for PSV, who, admittedly, only shone after the break. PSV will now fully focus on next Wednesday night’s second Champions League group game, away against Bordeaux.
