It looked like PSV would face a tough challenge, but in fact they extended their victory roll by coasting to an emphatic 4-0 win over Vitesse in Arnhem on Thursday night in a Dutch Cup third round cup tie. Arouna Koné and Jason Culina scored two goals before the break. Jefferson Farfán and captain Timmy Simons netted two more goals after the interval. Vitesse were rather passive and could not avert defeat at all. Ahead of Sunday afternoon’s crucial domestic clash with Ajax, PSV needed just a few brilliant moves to make the difference. PSV were 2-0 on top at half time and ended the rout in the closing stages of this one-sided game. Vitesse only threatened a few times on the stroke of half time. PSV controlled the game, patiently passed the ball around, trying to create openings in the Vitesse defence. Phillip Cocu was rested as he was not fully fit. PSV goalkeeper Gomes kept another blank sheet.Vitesse had a bright start and moved forward in the initial stages, but resilient PSV seemed unnerved and the game gradually swung back the other way as the visitors took most initiatives. PSV put on pressure and were rewarded for their adventurous play by the opening goal scored after twenty minutes. Arouna Koné had his name on the score sheet, just like he did in the previous cup tie, against amateurs Kozakken Boys. Culina and Farfán set up a move; the ball fell to the Ivory Coast international who created some space before unleashing a left-foot drive that flew into the bottom corner; 0-1. PSV took it easy, dominated proceedings and did not intend to create a lot of spectacular and entertaining moments for the 9, 600 crowd. Yet Ronald Koeman’s simply extended their lead five minutes after Koné had opened the scoring. Koné rounded his marker, squared the ball back to Culina, who put it into the goal at the near post. Goalkeeper Wapenaar was beaten for the second time and the Australian had opened his scoring account for PSV in an official game. Without unduly exerting themselves, PSV had virtually wrapped up the game, before Vitesse realised what was going on. The hosts, who were no match for PSV, tried to reduce the deficit in the closing stages of the first period. They won some corners in quick succession, but the PSV defence held firm.Koeman took off defender Alex at half time and Addo was brought on to replace him. Vitesse upped a gear, but PSV were hardly ever tested. Aissati came on for Culina and Afellay left the bench to take over from Väyrynen. While time was running out and PSV enjoyed most possession, Farfán tapped home the third goal of the night. Afellay had turned provider and Farfán made it three from close range ten minutes from time. Four minutes later Frankel pushed down Farfán in the penalty area and Timmy Simons coolly converted from the spot. Final score: 0-4. PSV have secured a spot in the final sixteen and will now focus on Sunday afternoon’s game.
