At only a short distance from their former stadium Highbury, Arsenal opened a new modern architectural stadium in July 2006, where there is a tremendous atmosphere for football fans.
The Emirates Stadium, named after the Emirates Airline with whom Arsenal have agreed a lucrative £100m sponsorship deal, has an all-seated capacity of 60, 432. The stadium is situated in Ashburton Grove, a street in the Borough of Islington in North London. Manchester United’s home base Old Trafford hosted a record crowd of 76,073, while the capacity crowd at Highbury was ‘only’ 38.500. The stadium will be known as the Emirates Stadium for at least 15 years. The deal also saw Emirates become the Gunners' shirt sponsor for eight years, starting in 2006-07. The overall project cost of the Emirates Stadium ran to 357 million pounds. 1800 new jobs were created a as a result of the new stadium project and 2, 000 new homes were built in the Borough of Islington. There is remarkably a lack of parking spaces: some 70% of all visitors use public transport.
