Eight teams from five countries have survived the UEFA Champions League First Knockout Round. Some results may not have been in accordance with the general expectations. PSV knocked out Arsenal, last season’s runners-up, while FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Internazionale were also eliminated. And PSV admit they were relieved to see that Olympique Lyon have crashed out of the tournament as well. The French ruling champions beat PSV in last season’s First Knockout Round. The season before PSV reached the semi finals at the expense of Lyon, who were regarded candidates to win the cup this season. AS Roma, Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC and Valencia CF had already booked places in the quarter finals on Tuesday night and will be joined by last night’s winners PSV, FC Bayern München, Manchester United and AC Milan at tomorrow afternoon’s draw.
If PSV should be paired with German defending champions FC Bayern München, they will not meet Mark van Bommel in the quarter final first leg. The dynamic midfielder was shown a red card, following two bookable offences and will consequently serve a one-match ban. Ruud van Nistelrooy reduced the deficit (2-1) in the Allianz Arena after converting a penalty, but as Real Madrid had conceded two goals at home in the first leg (3-2), the German defending champions booked a place in the last eight on away goals. The draw for the quarter finals and semi finals will take place at the Megaron International Conference Centre in Athens tomorrow at noon. FC Barcelona, last season’s winners, will hand the ‘Cup with the big ears’ back to Michel Platini, who was voted in President of the UEFA recently. No teams will be seeded, and sides from the same country may play each other. Three clubs represent England and two teams from Italy are still in contention. The final will take place at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on 23 May.
