Ismaïl Aissati is ruled out of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship after all. The injury that the PSV midfielder sustained in the opening game against Israel after 43 minutes, proved to be more serious than was initially thought. A second MRI scan has revealed a meniscus tear. Aissati will now return to Eindhoven.
Foppe de Haan Aissati’s injury is a setback for Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan. “This is a major blow to Ismail and to the team. He is a key member in our team and it will be hard to replace him. He has great technical skills and is able to create openings with his fine solo runs.” De Haan will not be allowed to call up a replacement for Aissati.
"Real Setback" Ismail Aissati was upset when he was told the bad news on Wednesday afternoon. “This is a real setback. When we went to hospital things seemed to be all right and I was given the green light to play against Belgium on Saturday night. But a second MRI scan has revealed a meniscus tear. I will not take any undue risks and will start a rehabilitation programme, after having first consulted the PSV medical staff.”
