PSV began their pre-season in style, after Ronald Koeman’s team emphatically beat amateurs Wilhelmina ’08 10-0 in Weert on Saturday night. New signings Kenneth Perez and Danko Lazovic opened their PSV scoring account at Sportpark Drakesteyn.
PSV had a tentative start and hosts RKSVW Wilhelmina ’08, who will celebrate their 100th anniversary on 8 February 2008, offered them tough resistance. Lazovic had his first effort on target after twelve minutes. The Serb put in a passionate display, but did not live up to his reputation as clinical finisher in the first half of the pre-season warm-up. But after the break, when Ibrahim Afellay was brought on, the striker was more successful. Lazovic made his mark after 17 minutes in the first half, when he turned provider for Perez, who opened the scoring with a powerful drive. Two minutes later Jan Kromkamp started a fine solo run that opened up the hosts’ defence and the defender himself doubled PSV’s advantage. Lazovic rattled the crossbar after 23 minutes, but John de Jong, who made a long-awaited return for PSV, pounced on the rebound; 3-0, which was also the half-time score.
Koeman brought on a completely new team for the second half with the exception of Danko Lazovic. PSV moved forward, with Afellay, who was outstanding as playmaker, and their constant pressure soon bore fruit, when Mika Väyrynen scored the fourth goal with a fierce shot from outside the box. One minute later Wilhelmina’s goalkeeper was again left with no chance, when Afellay fed Lazovic, who scored his first goal in PSV colours: 0-5. PSV then ran riot and Afellay bundled the ball home. Paul Voss made it seven, before Väyrynen scored his second goal; 0-8. PSV exchanged neat passes for the most beautiful goal of the evening, with Voss tapping home from close range. With fifteen minutes left, PSV tried to hit double digits. They succeeded in completing a tidy win two minutes from time, when Género Zeefuik, who was brought on as a substitute for Lazovic, created some space before lashing the ball home. The score board at Sportpark Drakesteyn could not cope and thus the score ended as it had begun.
