PSV and FC Twente were equal to each other in the Arke Stadium on Saturday night and were content to share the points after an entertaining, well-balanced game had ended in 0-0. Both teams came close to breaking the deadlock, but had to settle for a goalless draw in the end. The final score was a fair reflection of what had been going on, but defending champions PSV dropped points for the first time in the 2007-2008 campaign

PSV, who had slipped to a 1-0 defeat in last season's game, knew they would face fierce opposition from FC Twente, who are always backed by vociferous home support. The visitors came close to scoring the winning goal a number of times. Bakkal hit the post with a blistering drive, but the hosts also produced goal threat. FC Twente earned two corners in added time, but the PSV defence bravely held out in the hectic final minutes. PSV have collected seven points from their first three games, with goalkeeper Gomes keeping three straight clean sheets.
As many as four PSV players returned to the Arke Stadium in Enschede: Bakkal and Aissati spent last season on loan at FC Twente and Culina and Van der Leegte also had a spell at FC Twente before Danny Koevermans, who signed a four-year deal with PSV yesterday, started on the bench, where Edison Méndez kept him company. Both teams were attack-minded. PSV earned the first meaningful chance, when FC Twente goalkeeper Boschker kept his side in the game with a double save from a Perez effort. Soon afterwards Afellay cut into the box, but Bakkal failed to connect properly with his cross. FC Twente also had their moments. Huysegems brought out a fine save from Gomes, after Fred Rutten's team had already started two sweeping moves.
Lazovic played as striker up front alongside Perez, with Aissati providing assistance from the left flank and from Bakkal as box-to-box man. PSV gradually started to control the game, but the hosts came close to making the break through. Huysegems was put clear and Luinge booked Salcido for holding the FC Twente forward. The referee pointed to the spot to give the hosts a soft penalty, obviously to the delight of the home fans, but his assistant told him that the foul had been committed just outside the box. TV replays showed that it had been a right decision. The resulting free kick came to nothing and at half time the referee was a butt for criticism and ridicule.

After the break both teams created chances. Bakkal hit the post with a blistering drive, but Gomes was constantly put into action. With twenty minutes remaining, Koeman took off Lazovic and handed Koevermans his PSV debut. Five minutes later Méndez left the bench to replace Aissati. Neither side was able to break the stalemate in the closing stages, either, so FC Twente and PSV had to settle for a goalless draw. No league fixtures have been scheduled for next weekend as a great many countries play qualifying games.
