Koeman concluded at the post-match press conference that his team should never have got into problems. “We only have ourselves to blame. We should have wrapped up the game before the break”, he admitted, referring to, among other things, the justified penalty appeal that referee Kevin Blom had controversially waved away.

“We played some good football during the first half, created plenty of chances and were even too attack-minded at times. After the break we conceded space, but we defended well. We survived a few scares, but Vitesse were unable to take their chances. We should actually have wrapped up the game before the break. We failed to finish off our opponents, and the referee should have awarded us a penalty. But we could have killed off the game and we didn't do that.”
Koeman heaped praise on Danny Koevermans. “He put in a commanding display and scored a great goal. He is strong and holds the ball up well. He linked up well with fellow striker Lazovic, and had real goal threat. He told us he felt some pain in his upper leg, so we decided not to take nay risks. He scored a great goal on his home debut. His goal has given him and the club a great boost.”

“I think PSV deserved to win, as they created most chances”, started Vitesse coach Aad de Mos his analysis of the game. “They created a number of clear-cut chances. Lazovic should have scored and they might have been given a penalty, while our goalkeeper Velthuizen pulled off a string of fines saves. We may have hit the crossbar twice, yet I think we were not well-organized in the first period. We made a few tactical changes at half time in a bid to get a result after all. We were dominant in midfield after the break and PSV were made to work hard until the final whistle. I accept the result. I think we have a team of talented players who succeeded in putting pressure on the hosts. PSV deserved to win, but we will leave Eindhoven with our heads held high.”
