36-year-old Portuguese Pedro Proença Oliveira Alves Garcia from Lisbon has been named as referee for PSV's Champions League group stage opening match against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. He refereed matches at the Champions League preliminary rounds before, but has never officiated at matches in the Champions League tournament.
Pedro Proença is one of thirteen referees, including Dutchmen Wegereef, Vink and Braamhaar, who has been added to the UEFA list of referees and assistant referees. Proença was appointed referee for the Euro Under-19 final in 2004. He will be assisted at the Philips Stadium on Wednesday night by his fellow countrymen Joao Ferreira Dos Santos and Sergio Manuel Lacroix Pimenta. Vasco Antonio Moreira Dos Santos is fourth official. PSV-CSKA Moscow kicks off at 20:45. PSV will train at the Philips Stadium on Tuesday at 11:00, before head coach Ronald Koeman will conduct a press conference, after which the squad withdraws to prepare for Wednesday's game. CSKA will train at 19:30.
