Ruud van Nistelrooy was inspirational in Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Werder Bremen at Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night. The former PSV striker netted the winning goal sixteen minutes from time, scoring his 50th goal in the competition.

Real Madrid beat stubborn Werder Bremen, with star Diego who showed great technical skills, 2-1 in their group opening fixture. Dutchmen Ruud van Nistelrooy and summer signing Sneijder were handed a start, while fellow countrymen Drenthe and Robben were brought on as substitutes.
Olympiakos Piraeus and Lazio settled for a 1-1 draw in the other Group C match. Braamhaar had been appointed to referee the match in Greece. The Dutch referee will take charge of PSV-Feyenoord at the Philips Stadium on Sunday night. In Group A Liverpool salvaged a draw against FC Porto in Portugal. Dirk Kuyt levelled the score for the visitors, who were reduced to ten men after Pennant had been shown a second yellow card. Olympique Marseille, who had included Boudewijn Zenden in their starting line-up, enjoyed a 2-0 win over the Turkish side Besiktas in the other group A match.
Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Rosenborg from Norway. Sjevtsjenko scored the goal for the hosts. Valencia took all three points in Germany, after overcoming FC Schalke 04 in their opening Group B game in the UEFA Champions League. Match-winner was David Villa, who put in an awesome display. Champion League holders AC Milan saw off Benfica 2-1 at home in Group D, while Shaktar Donestk coasted to a 2-0 win in Ukraine over Celtic, with former PSV striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
