At the post-match press conference PSV head coach Ronald Koeman drew the conclusion that PSV deserved to win, as they showed a more attacking approach in the second half. He added that Afellay has probably broken a toe, but the real extent of his injury will be revealed on Thursday. Koeman is afraid the midfielder will be out of contention for a number of weeks.

“It is important to start with a win in the group stage opening game at home”, emphasized Koeman, who had not expected Inter to slip to a 1-0 defeat against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul in the other Group G match. “I thought CSKA started well. They took the initiative and dominated spells of the first half, as we failed to put pressure. Later in the match we created more pressure, as we played more football out of the defence and kept possession for long spells. CSKA's two strikers, Vgner Love and Jô, are world class. They produce goal threat and are always available to receive the ball. We did not concede too many chances and created a few ourselves. I must admit, though, they could have scored a late equaliser. They reduced the deficit after 89 minutes, setting up a thrilling finale to an entertaining game. But all in all, I think we deserved the win.”
Koeman paid a compliment to substitute Kenneth Perez for making his mark soon after he had been brought on. “I decided not to hand him a start for tactical reasons. CSKA play full backs that constantly overlap. I wanted to play an extra midfielder, but Perez put in a convincing display.” Koeman was also content with Da Costa's performance. “He marked Jô very well.”
The PSV head coach was afraid that Afellay will be out of contention for a number of weeks with a broken toe. “The real nature of his injury will be revealed on Thursday morning, but I am not optimistic. It is a shame that he will be sidelined for some time after falling victim to another reckless challenge.”
