Romário de Souza Faria has taken over as temporary coach of his club Vasco da Gama. He will lead the team for the Copa Sul América quarter final match against Mexican club América, but the Brazilian star striker will not be in charge at Vasco for a long time.

The former PSV striker, who scored the 1000th goal of his 23-year career on 20 May 2007, has taken over as temporary coach after Celso Roth was dismissed, following some disappointing results. Romário will be at the helm on Wednesday when the club from Rio play host to América at the SĂŁo Januário Stadium for the Copa Sul América quarter final return leg. The Mexicans enjoyed a 2-0 win in the first leg.
Romário last played a game on 14 June. He then underwent ankle surgery, and has all but recovered. Romário scored three goals in his four appearances for Vasco in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
