Defender Eric Addo has offered his apologies to PSV head coach Ronald Koeman and General Manager Jan Reker for the spitting incident in which he was involved during the closing stages of the first half of the UEFA Champions League group stage game PSV-Fenerbahçe. 'This should never have happened', said Reker. PSV await UEFA verdict.

Tempers frayed on the pitch on Tuesday night, with Eric Addo at loggerheads with Semih Sentürk. The Fenerbahçe striker appeared to be involved in a row and clearly elbowed Addo, which provided the spark. Addo lost his temper and took revenge by spitting at his opponent.
'We will never tolerate such behaviour at this club. We take this sort of thing very badly. This should never have happened. We were surprised to see Eric Addo of all players lose self-control. He acts as a positive role model to all young players and has never behaved in an objectionable way before in all those years with PSV. Eric has admitted that he lost his temper and his offered his sincere apologies. We have sorted out this affair internally. One thing should be perfectly clear, though: spitting an opponent is simply unacceptable.'
Both Addo and Sentürk may face suspension, after UEFA has charged Addo with committing an act of gross unsporting conduct.. The matter will be dealt with at UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body meeting in Nyon on Friday.
The referee and his assistants missed the incident. The Fenerbahçe players were annoyed when PSV played on, while one of their team mates had gone down injured. The English referee Howard Webb, though, had made it emphatically clear before the match that he was the only one to stop play.
Two Fenerbahçe players will miss the return leg in Istanbul in two weeks through suspension. Centre back Lugano was booked for the third time in the Champions League campaign, which results into an automatic one-match ban, and forward Deivid is suspended for the straight red card the referee showed him on Tuesday.
