PSV Media - PSV have confirmed at a press conference that they have appointed Huub Stevens as their new head coach. The announcement ends the club's search for a replacement for Ronald Koeman, who left PSV earlier this month to take over at La Liga side Valencia. Huub Stevens, currently at the helm of German Bundesliga club HSV, will take charge at the Dutch champions at the end of the season. Stevens will put pen to paper on a two-year deal that will keep him in Eindhoven until the summer of 2010. Stevens has meanwhile revealed at a press conference in Hamburg that he will leave HSV when his contract expires at the end of the season.
PSV General Manager Jan Reker conducted a press conference at the Philips Stadium on Monday afternoon, where he announced that 53-year old Huub Stevens will leave Hamburger SV at the end of the 2007/08 season. Stevens returns to the club where he plied his trade as a player and a coach from 1975 until 1993. When head coach Bobby Robson underwent surgery, he took over as caretaker manager for six games and he will be in full control as from next summer. Stevens, born in Sittard on 29 November 1953, still lives in Acht, close to De Herdgang training centre.
Stevens made appearances for Fortuna Sittard and PSV as a professional football player. During his time at the Philips Stadium, he earned 18 caps for his country and scored one goal. He began his coaching career in 1993 with Roda JC from Kerkrade. From October 1996 to June 2002 Stevens was in charge at Schalke 04, where he won the UEFA Cup in 1997 and the DFB Pokal in 2001 and 2002. He then made a move to Hertha BSC Berlin, but was dismissed on 4 December 2003. Stevens spent one season as manager of 1. FC Köln before he returned to Holland in May 2005 to become head coach of Roda JC. In February 2007, he returned to the Bundesliga, where he took over from Thomas Doll as boss at Hamburger SV. He guided them to seventh place in the standings, while HSV currently lie third in the Bundesliga, just one point behind Bayern Munich and level with second-placed Werder Bremen. Next season, Stevens's dream of becoming head coach at the club he has taken to heart will finally come true.
