Having lost their first three games in the South American World Cup 2010 qualifying group, Ecuador at last returned to winning ways, thrashing Peru 5-1 in Quito on Wednesday night. Interim coach Sixto Vizuete, who takes charge as caretaker manager of Ecuador after coach Luis Suarez had handed in his resignation following Saturday's 5-1 thrashing in Paraguay, handed a start to Edison Méndez. The PSV midfielder scored a double. Peru had made six changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Brazil on Sunday. PSV striker Farfán started on the bench and was brought on at the hour mark.
Ecuador took a bright start at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, with Walter Ayovi scoring the opening goal after ten minutes Ivan Kaviedes doubled Ecuador's advantage after 24 minutes and Edison Méndez made it three on the verge of half time. Ecuador also dominated proceedings after the break, with Ayovi as well as Méndez scoring their second goal of the night. Andrés Mendoza scored a consolation goal for Peru in the closing stages.
Colombia pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory against Argentina, so Paraguay, who comprehensively defeated Chili 3-0, are on top of the group. Peru have dropped to ninth place.
