PSV caretaker coach Sef Vergoossen admitted at the post-match press conference that he was not impressed by his team's performance. He thought that PSV had been slow to get going, had been poor in the closing stages and had lacked tempo. Sparta Rotterdam head coach Foeke Booy had started the game with a severely depleted squad, but was not too down-hearted after the defeat.

'I think we started too slowly', analysed Sef Vergoossen his side's poor display at the post-match press conference, 'We lacked determination and were too anxious. We put in an average first-half performance, and hardly created space. We started to dominate after some twenty minutes and broke the deadlock, but Sparta also had a chance to open the scoring. We did not really improve in the second half. We upped a gear but were unable to maintain the tempo for forty-five minutes. We were sloppy at times and lacked tactical discipline and I feel the overall performance was disappointing', said Vergoossen, taking a swipe at his team in spite of the 3-1 win.

Foeke Booy's side were rocked with injury and suspension blows. Seven players had not been available for the clash with PSV and Sepp de Roover had just completed a move to FC Groningen. 'We knew we faced an uphill battle, but we were anxious to fight till the bitter end. We provided tough opposition by packing the midfield, leaving PSV little space to attack. We'll take positives from the game and focus on the next game, which is far more important for us.'
