Fifteen minutes after midnight, Sef Vergoossen started his analysis of his side's 6-5 win after a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out at the Philips Stadium on Wednesday night. The PSV head coach was delighted PSV have reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. He was obviously impressed by the goalkeeping heroics produced by Gomes, but lavished praises on all his players for an excellent team display.
'I think we started brightly, but were soon forced to defend deeply. We were nervy and hesitant during the closing stages and Tottenham cancelled out the 1-0 deficit', said Vergoossen. 'But my players deserve praise for a spirited comeback and we were the better side in extra time. We realise we have knocked a big team out of the UEFA Cup. We did not dominate the game, but the result is of overriding importance. We are indebted to Gomes, who pulled off a terrific save just before the final whistle went. He had a huge impact on the game and played a major part in the team's success.' Captain Timmy Simons maintained that penalties are no longer a lottery when Gomes is the man between the posts.
Juande Ramos saw his hopes of winning a third UEFA Cup in a row ended in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Eindhoven. Things looked to go Tottenham's way when Jermaine Jenas stepped up to seal victory with the fifth kick, but Gomes saved. 'I can only congratulate my players. Every player that takes a penalty is courageous. We have no regrets. We wanted to win the match and we did that. It came down to penalties and they are like a lottery. It's heads or tails. Everyone is sad in the dressing room. We came desperately close to reaching the UEFA Cup quarter finals; that's why we are disappointed. I hope the players will pull themselves together. We have two months of league football left and we must bravely carry on', concluded Ramos, who won the UEFA Cup last season with Sevilla, after penalties in the final against Espanyol, his second successive triumph in the competition.
