PSV booked a place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals as they claimed a 6-5 win over Tottenham Hotspur. A penalty shoot-out was needed to get a result as the final score after 120 minutes was 1-1 on aggregate. PSV keeper Gomes became the hero as he kept out a Jermaine Jenas penalty, while Pascal Chimbonda put his spot-kick wide. PSV were again indebted to the Brazilian stopper, who saved two penalties during a penalty shoot-out against Olympique Lyon in 2005, sending his side into the semi finals.
PSV TV interviewed PSV head coach Sef Vergoossen, Dirk Marcellis and keeper Gomes. Marcellis said: 'We did not take any risks as long as it was 0-0. We defended well, but Berbatov scored a goal nine minutes from time.' The 19-year-old centre back stepped up to take the decisive penalty for. 'It turned out to be the last spot-kick, but I didn't know that, as a Tottenham player still had to take his penalty. Our coach had appointed five players; then Bakkal stepped up and finally it was my turn. This is just great!', said Marcellis. Sef Vergoossen praised his two youngsters for their courage. But Heurelho da Silva Gomes was undoubtedly the hero of the night. He explained: 'I don't agree that penalties are a lottery. I try to wait until the final moment and wait on the player's decision before I react. Jenas stepped up and I selected the right corner.'
