Sef Vergoossen praised his side for a spirited performance against FC Groningen. 'We played our third match in the space of eight days, but it looked like we had been enjoying a three-week holiday. We were keen to win', said Vergoossen at the post-match press conference. The PSV head coach added that the injury that Jefferson Farfán had sustained looked less serious than was originally feared.
Farfán was stretchered off the pitch after he had sustained an injury during the closing stages. Vergoossen had been informed by the club doctor that the injury looked less serious than was originally feared, but could not reveal the exact nature yet. He praised PSV, who started brightly, for a spirited performance against FC Groningen, ending a tough week on a high. 'We had told our players to go for it. It looked like we were finally allowed to play a game of football again after a three-week break. The players deserve credit for showing great work rate. In fact, at times we were too eager to score a goal and failed to deliver the final pass accurately. We felt relieved after we had opened the scoring and we scored the second goal at a most convenient moment, minutes after the restart. And the third goal wrapped up the points. We are content having concluded such a hectic week in style', said Vergoossen in the press room at the Philips Stadium.
FC Groningen coach Ron Jans said his team had been forced to face reality. 'The defeat has left me feeling empty. We thought we could get a result, but we are left empty-handed after we failed to control proceedings in the latter part of the first half. We started tentatively and frquently lost possession. We started the second half with good intentions, but were soon trailing 2-0. We did not stand a chance tonight, which, I think, is very embarrsassing. We lacked skills and conviction to provide tough opposition tonight', concluded a distraught Jans.
