Celtic clinched a third successive SPL title on Thursday night with a 1-0 victory against Dundee United. Former PSV striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored the only goal on the final day of the season, taking his tally to fifteen goals. Rivals and townsmen Rangers lost 2-0 to Aberdeen.

Celtic and Rangers went into their final matches equal on points but with Celtic having the advantage on goal difference. Rangers eventually paid the price for a hectic fixture list and coming back from big European games proved to be too big a problem for them. But as Celtic also felt the pressure, for a long time it looked one goal would be enough for Rangers to clinch the title. However, The Gers were trailing 1-0 when Aberdeen striker Lee Miller gave his side the lead on the hour mark with a glancing header. Less than ten minutes later, The Bhoys had even more reason to celebrate, when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink rose in a crowded penalty box to head home a corner kick after 72 minutes at Tannadice Park. The helicopter with the SPL trophy subsequently flew to Dundee. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will report for duty with the Dutch team shortly, as he celebrates his second consecutive championship in Scotland.
